This spring I had the opportunity to sing Euridice in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice. The best part of this was the people - since it is not a long opera and there are only three characters, we had really lovely rehearsals getting to know each other and singing together. Musically, I enjoyed working on the recitative the most, followed by the duet with Orfeo. This is an interesting myth, isn't it? How do we trust that someone truly loves us, especially when they behave as though they don't? I understand why Euridice pled with him to look at her, and why he eventually gave in, being unable to bear the pain of knowing he was hurting her. He had a beautiful instinct. That's why this version of the story is so lovely - unlike in the usual myth, Amore lets them win and live together on earth, even though they failed the test!
Here's my aria for funsies
Sung with mezzo Anna Sonkina-Dorman and pianist Richard Nechamkin
